Techniques and Strategies for Aquatics Instructors to Facilitate Successful Participation in Autism Swim Programs.


Intended For:

  • Swim instructors and leadership staff.
Participants Will:
  • Gain an understanding of inclusion philosophies and review best practices for positive supporting techniques and language to use when working with persons with diverse abilities.
  • Get a basic introduction to traits of Autism, ADD/ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorders and why certain approaches help promote success in an instructional setting.
  • Learn and practice preventative strategies in small group settings including use of a visual schedule, the effectiveness of setting expectations and using a transition countdown.
  • Review and practice of positive supporting techniques to use with swimmers, and tips for communicating with families, confidentiality and information sharing.
  • Be given instruction on how to create and implement water-resistant tools that become part of your program practices and culture for all.




Designing Aquatics Programs for Diverse Abilities – swim instruction, swim team, unified, specialized and fully inclusive models.


Intended For:

  • Leadership staff and program developers.
Participants Will:
  • Learn how to evaluate your community needs to identify the best programming to run.
  • Review the various options of inclusion programs to find the best to meet your community needs and resources: swim instruction, specialized, unified, full inclusion teams or social clubs.
  • Understand the philosophy of progression toward full inclusion.
  • Gain insight on how to access specific swim instruction techniques for individuals with diverse abilities.
  • Be given instruction on how to create and implement water-resistant tools that become part of your program practices and culture for all.
  • Explore ways to partner with community organizations that can provide volunteer and/or expertise for swim instruction.
