After School or Preschool Setting

Inclusion Philosophies and Best Practices in an Afterschool Setting – welcoming and supporting school aged children with diverse abilities.


Intended For:

  • Front line and leadership staff.
Participants Will:
  • Gain an understanding of inclusion philosophies in an afterschool setting, the benefits of inclusion and why every staff member has responsibilities to ensure all children have the opportunity to be successful.
  • Get a basic introduction to traits of Autism, ADD/ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorders and why certain approaches help promote success in an afterschool setting.
  • Learn and practice preventative strategies in small group settings including use of a visual schedule, the effectiveness of setting expectations and using a transition countdown.
  • Review and practice of positive supporting techniques to use with members, and tips for communicating with families, confidentiality and information sharing.

  • Gain an understanding of inclusion philosophies in a playroom setting, the benefits of inclusion and why every staff member has responsibilities to ensure all children have the opportunity to be successful.

  • Learn and practice preventative strategies in small group settings including the effectiveness of setting expectations, using a transition countdown and how to use a sensory kit.
  • Review and practice of positive supporting techniques to use with children, and tips for communicating with families, confidentiality and information sharing.
